What is a Total Knee Replacement?

When conservative treatments for conditions of the knee joint have failed, the damaged surfaces of the knee can be removed and replaced by artificial components in a procedure known as a total knee replacement. One of the most common indications for a total knee replacement is severe knee arthritis.

What Should I Expect During a Total Knee Replacement?

Surgery is usually done under spinal anesthesia and takes about an hour to perform. After the initial exposure is complete, the damaged bone on the femur and tibia are resurfaced. Trial components are placed to ensure appropriate ligament balance and full range of motion prior to implanting the final replacement. Once all components are in place the incision is typically closed with a dissolvable suture beneath the skin. When indicated, robotic or image guidance technology are employed. Dr. Phillips uses data-driven practices to customize knee replacement surgery to her patient and their goals.

What is the Postoperative Course After a Total Knee Replacement?

Immediately after the procedure patients can typically put their full weight on their surgical leg. The majority of patients are discharged home on the day of surgery. Outpatient physical therapy is critically important for rehabilitating a total knee replacement. It takes place 2-3 times per week for 8-12 weeks. By 12 weeks, most patients are well recovered and returning to athletic activities. However, small gains can be made out to the 1 year mark when full recovery has occurred.

Is Total Knee Replacement Right For Me?

Total knee replacement may be recommended when there is severe knee degeneration that involves a large portion of the joint and conservative treatments are inadequately controlling your symptoms.
